ABC NewsMay 2008 Meeting Minutes Posted Thursday, May 22, 2008 by Jim Britt

Our club met at El Chico Rodney Parham on May 8th, 2008. President Jim Britt called the meeting to order.

Monty Cole delivered the first report of the meeting. He has graciously volunteered to head several community outreach programs that will involve our club. The first program is the Ride of Silence which will occur on Wednesday, May 21st at 7:00. We will ride two abreast, with no talking the entire ride. This ride honors the bicyclers who have been injured or died while riding their bicycle. This ride was stared by Chris Phelan who had a friend who was killed while riding his bike in Texas . Monty and Ian brought the concept to our community. The ride will take place on the road and not a trail. It will begin at the I-430 bridge and Big Dam Bridge .

Monty is also involved with the organization of CASA. It is an advocacy program for kids in foster cares. Monty is working to find out how we can better help this agency. Look for our help with this program starting in 2009.

The National Trails Symposium is set for November 15-18, 2008. It will occur here in Little Rock . It will be a huge deal for our community. Volunteers are needed in every aspect. Go to the symposium site and sign up www.americantrails.org with all sorts of jobs and times being available.

It time for another Back to Work ride. The next one is scheduled for Friday, May 16th. Check the BACA website for details.

The June Prediction ride is around the corner. Judy McDowell needs assistance with timing the event. We are also in need of a SAG to provide support to the bikers and help provide cold drinks to take up the hill. Call Jim at 912-1449.

As always, keep in touch with the ABC website for more info as it evolves

With no further discussion on the table, Jim adjourned the meeting.

Respectfully submitted, Jamie Hazlewood, Club Secretary

ABC NewsNational Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 16, 2008 Posted Sunday, May 11, 2008 by Jim Britt

BACA is sponsoring two rides this year. One ride begins at 6:45 a.m. at the boat ramp parking area east of the Burns Park Golf Course in North Little Rock. The other ride starts at 6:45 a.m. at the boat ramp at Murray Park in Little Rock.

Both groups will proceed to the River Market where there will be a light breakfast sponsored by Boulevard Bread Co., a free t-shirt, and water bottle.

We urge people to pre-register. Registration forms will be at the May 1st BACA meeting and at the May 8th ABC meeting and at local bike shops --Chainwheel, Arkansas Cycling & Fitness, the Community Bicyclist (in back of Tanglewood Shopping Center), Lewis & Clark Outfitters, and J&P Bike Shop. You may get maps of the routes and print out a registration form at www.bacar.org and drop it off at one of the local bike shops or fitness centers listed above.

In connection with promoting Bike to Work Day, we will be having a bicycle-commuter challenge on May 5th. Bicyclists will compete against the Mayors of Little Rock and North Little Rock. Stay tuned for more information as a bicyclist attempts to reach the River Market before the automobile commuter does.

Get a volunteer shirt by being a bike buddy, work at registration before the ride or work at the finish handing out t-shirts and water bottles. Contact Judy Lansky at lanskygould@comcast.net or 225-5343 Ron Rizzardi at rrizzardi@comcast.net
