Safe Routes To School Opens New Web Site... Posted Friday, August 24, 2007 by Sprokets
"Just recently, the Safe Routes to School National Partnership launched a new Web site (www.saferoutespartnership.org) to help parents, schools, local and state governments and advocacy groups implement programs that will encourage more kids to walk and bike to and from school.
The $612 million federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, which was approved by the U.S. Congress in 2005, provides funding to all 50 states and the District of Columbia to support education and enforcement programs and to help communities improve infrastructure such as building sidewalks and bike paths."
The site has an interactive map of the United States and each program in each state. See AR here:
http://www.saferoutespartnership.org/state/5043/arkansas
Contains info on contacts, Arkansas SRTS Federal Funding, and Organizations supporting the program.

August Board meeting, Aug. 2, 2007 Posted Tuesday, August 14, 2007 by Jim Britt
President Jim Britt opened the meeting. Monty Cole reported on his Share the Road project. He is developing the artwork for a decal that will be placed on a special license plate. He presented the members with a “mock up” of 4 choices in design from which to choose. We will need 300 signatures that will show a pledge of interest. We will request signatures from members of BACA, CARP, ABC and the Running club. All will be presented to the Arkansas DF&A sometime in September. The board voted in support of the project and design for the decal.
Tim Vahsholtz reported that he and Rene Buchholtz have created an event that will promote bicycling. Their idea is a “Ride with the Big Dam Bridge Fashion Show”. They presented a draft of a poster depicting a “Cycle Chic” theme. The event is planned in conjunction with the Big Dam Bridge Bicycle Event. Monies will go to benefit the BDB foundation. Tickets to be priced at $15 per person. At this time, donations for sponsorship are being accepted. The board voted to support this event and furnished a check to Tim in the amount of $350.
Jim has been working hard on the Arky 100. It will be held in Sheridan Sunday, October 14th 2007, with a camping option Saturday, Oct. 13th.
In conjunction with the event, there will be help from the Boy Scouts with rest stops, a spaghetti dinner coordinated by Bill Steward and muffins and juice for the Scouts and campers participating in the ride.
Some of the areas in which we will need help will be in marking the route. Vanness Reed will coordinate this. Sag wagon--Claibanne has volunteered and will need help- ABC to furnish gasoline, radio communication-Radio club is coming, complete manning of 5 rest stops-some help from Boy Scouts, food, help with registration, Vanness Reed to obtain 1 policeman for riding through Sheridan, T-shirts-Ian, and signs to get to the Rec Center through Sheridan, wire stands for these signs. More help for the rest stops will be needed. A sign will also be made to show sponsorship of our event from Chainwheel, city of Sheridan, Ar Egg Council/Livestock and Poultry Commission. The board voted to show approval of all of Jim’s ideas on the project.
Respectfully submitted,
Jamie Hazlewood

Bicycle collides with young girl on BDB Posted Monday, August 6, 2007 by Ian Hope
For those that have not heard, about a week ago there was an incident on the BDB where a cyclist collided with a 9 year old girl. The girl apparently was walking across the bridge with family and the cyclist was also crossing the bridge to the NLR side. The story goes that the young girl made a turn across the bridge and the cyclist ran into her. Reports are that she was injured and she might have some lasting effects from it. I do not know if the cyclist was injured and that is all the information I have.
This is already going to litigation and there is the real potential for damage to cycling as a whole. It was reported that the cyclist was moving "at a high rate of speed" when the accident occured. We all know this is a very subjective term but it will come into play if this goes to court.
The ABC would like to remind everyone that the best thing for everyone is for riders to slow down on the bridge and if in a group, go in single file, keeping to the right. Signal your approach and passing when you go around walkers, runners and other cyclists.
Thanks
